Skype Network is Down

August 16th, 2007

Many of you may have noticed that Skype is not working. According to the Skype Blog:

UPDATED 14:02 GMT: Some of you may be having problems logging into Skype. Our engineering team has determined that it’s a software issue. We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours. Meanwhile, you can simply leave your Skype client running and as soon as the issue is resolved, you will be logged in. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Additionally, downloads of Skype have been temporarily disabled. We will make downloads available again as quickly as possible.

If you need to contact us urgently please use the contact form on our site and we will call you back.

Alternatively, we have logged into our very hardly used GTalk account.  If you have a GTalk account you can contact us using our username of “prazgod”

Free SkypeOut calls from the US and Canada to UK, Mexico and Japan on three weekends – Skype Blogs

July 11th, 2006

Full release here. Note that this applies only to the US and Canada.

free_uk_calls.png

Free SkypeOut calling to the United Kingdom, Mexico and Japan is available weekends July 15-16, July 22-23 and July 29-30, respectively. The free international SkypeOut calling offer to each country runs 48 hours from 12:01 a.m. EDT Saturdays through Sundays at midnight EDT, when international calling is at a peak.

Many of skypes recent “free calls” initiatives have been circling around North America recently. This leaves the rest of you worried, as we’ve seen it in comments. Fear not, for we are working on expanding the scope of these activities, as you can also see with the Gift Days. I know that Henry Gomez who assumed the “chief marketer” position in Skype just last week is very keen on this and will post his own updates here shortly.

Introducing Skype Heartbeat

July 1st, 2006

Introducing Heartbeat – Skype Blogs

heartbeat_so.pngSkype now has a new site, the Skype Heartbeat. The objective of Heartbeat is to be a no-nonsense location where you can see the status of the Skype infrastructure components that support all the free and paid features. There are two main parts to the site:

  • Current status of all skype’s primary and secondary systems, indicated with icon as well as text. If you see it bright red and pulsing, it’s fine (the smaller icons don’t pulse, they’re just bright red). If it’s darker and broken, there’s no circulation and it’s dead.
  • Text announcements about infrastructure availability and other important changes, such as pricelist or regional updates.

So whenever you’re having trouble with Skype, be sure to check Heartbeat. The other channels to get more information continue to be our Customer Service and forums.

Removal of Live Help from our site and components

May 28th, 2006

I write to let you know that we have taken the decision to remove the live chat/help buttons from our website and components with effect from 15 June 2006.  The reasons for this are many, including, but not limited to:

  • The general acceptance of Skype as a method of obtaining both Live Help and presales support.
  • The abusive emails from customers saying that the live help buttons (javascript) takes too long too load, or distracts them while working inside our components.
  • We don’t have enough time to host endless live conversations, 6mins x 10 visitors = a whole hour!
  • The cost of the LivePerson service is over GBP£1000.00 per year (Yes we know there are free alternatives, but LivePerson is the best of the best)
  • Our live chat service is offline more than online as we try to get some work done.
  • Other methods of support and self-help support are available, most support and presales emails are now being replied to in less than 12-24 hours (A major improvement on a few months ago)
  • The LivePerson client software is not compatible with Linux, which means always running two machines.

We will shortly be reintroducing our new Customer Centre with a whole host of other self-help support options, including the new forums and possibly a wiki for registered customers only.

We will remove the tracking code and LivePerson buttons from our components on the next point release of each component.
